Rabat – In a report prepared for the United Nations General Assembly and presented on Monday, a UN special committee tasked with reviewing Israeli practices in the Palestinian territories raised the alarm over Israel’s military operations in Gaza, suggesting that its current tactics meet the criteria of genocide.
The committee, mandated by a series of General Assembly resolutions since 1968, points to the escalating civilian death toll and the severe humanitarian conditions faced by Palestinians in the region as key indicators.
The UN Special Committee, which operates under General Assembly resolution 2443 (XXIII) and subsequent directives, includes representatives from Malaysia, Senegal and Sri Lanka.
The committee’s recent findings argue that measures taken against civilians in Gaza may fit the definition of genocide under international law, a classification that heightens the legal implications and global scrutiny of the situation.
The report’s findings point to actions taken against Gaza’s civilian population that may align with international legal definitions of genocide, a classification with substantial legal and political implications.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, over 43,300 people have been killed over the past 13 months, with many bodies still believed trapped beneath rubble from bombed structures.
Among those killed by the IOF brutal campaign, one in three is reportedly a child, with the UN citing that nearly 70% of verified casualties in a six-month period were women and children.
The UN Human Rights Office has repeatedly condemned the number of civilian casualties in Gaza, where a prolonged blockade and restricted access to essential resources have exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation.
Gaza has seen repeated wars that have raised international concern, with humanitarian organizations documenting the high death toll, ongoing blockade, and limited access to essentials as pressing issues.
In January 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a ruling emphasizing Israel’s responsibilities under the Genocide Convention, ordering preventive actions to avoid any further escalation of violence toward Gaza’s civilian population.
The ICJ emphasized on the necessity of maintaining humanitarian access and addressing concerns raised by several UN member states, including South Africa, which has called for measures to safeguard the rights of Palestinians as specified under the Genocide Convention.
