Morocco Make History With 601 Passes, Most by African Team at a World Cup

Saibari’s 70-second thunderbolt against Scotland stands as the fastest goal at the 2026 World Cup, though the all-time record still belongs to Turkey’s Hakan Şükür, who struck after just 11 seconds against South Korea in 2002.

Marrakech – The Atlas Lions continue to raise the bar for African football on the world stage. Morocco completed 601 passes in their 1-0 Group C victory over Scotland at Boston Stadium on Friday, setting a new record for the most by an African team in a FIFA World Cup match since records began in 1966.

The tally came from 671 attempts, an accuracy rate that underpinned 59% possession and near-total territorial control across 90 minutes. Morocco outpassed Scotland 601 to 388 of 455, dominated final-third phase completion at 72% against 61%, and recorded 62 entries into the attacking third compared to 59.

A supremacy anchored by a solid team structure

The passing supremacy was anchored by a composed back line that dictated tempo from deep. Center-back Issa Diop logged 100 touches and 93 passes. Alongside him, Chadi Riad completed 66 of 69 attempts with two key blocks. Full-back Noussair Mazraoui went 50 of 54 in distribution while adding three clearances and an interception.

Captain Achraf Hakimi topped everyone with 108 touches and 75 of 81 passes, constantly stepping into advanced positions down the right flank.

Higher up the pitch, 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi controlled the midfield in only his second competitive international cap. His one-touch distribution fed Morocco’s passing lanes and kept Scotland chasing the ball for sustained spells. Brahim Diaz delivered three key passes, five progressive carries covering 145.98 meters, and the assist that set the tone early.

The game-changing Diaz-Saibari connection

That assist came after just 70 seconds. Diaz threaded a ball down the right channel, and Ismael Saibari beat the offside trap before thundering a fierce strike into the top-left corner.

It was the fastest goal at the 2026 World Cup and the earliest winning goal in a 1-0 result in tournament history. It was also the second-fastest goal ever scored by an African nation at a World Cup, behind only Asamoah Gyan’s 68-second strike for Ghana against Czechia in 2006.

Saibari became the first Moroccan player to score in consecutive World Cup appearances and only the second African player after Egypt’s Mohamed Salah to net in his first two outings at FIFA’s flagship competition.

His combination with Diaz has now produced both of Morocco’s goals at this tournament, making Diaz only the second Moroccan to provide multiple assists at a single World Cup, after Tahar El-Khalej in 1998. It is also only the second time on record that an African player has assisted the same teammate twice in World Cup history.

Saibari’s Sofascore Player of the Match rating of 7.8 reflected a complete performance: one goal, one shot on target, one hit off the woodwork, 21 of 25 passes, 13 carries for 182.34 meters, and defensive contributions including a tackle won and three recoveries.

Morocco is becoming a record-breaking footballing powerhouse

Morocco finished with a 12-6 shot advantage and a 0.97 to 0.54 edge in expected goals. Scotland, by contrast, failed to register a single shot on target – only the second time in their World Cup history after a 1986 defeat to Denmark.

Morocco’s win over Scotland also extended their unbeaten run in the World Cup group stage to six matches, dating back to their 2-2 draw with Spain in 2018, making it the longest such streak by an African nation.

The Atlas Lions have now surpassed Cameroon, who went five group-stage matches unbeaten between 1982 and 1990, and Senegal, who recorded the same five-match run between 2002 and 2018.

The result lifted Morocco to the top of Group C with four points from two matches, following their 1-1 draw with Brazil. It also gave Morocco their sixth all-time FIFA World Cup victory overall, drawing them level with Ghana and Nigeria for the most wins by an African nation in tournament history.

Coach Mohamed Ouahbi acknowledged the gap between dominance and finishing. “We lacked a bit of efficiency,” he said. “But we played a great match.”

Morocco face Haiti in their final group fixture. Scotland, on three points, must take on five-time champions Brazil with their knockout-stage hopes on a knife edge.
