Rabat— A recent performance in Saudi Arabia has sparked outrage among internet users, who criticized the stage designed to resemble the Kaaba.
The Kaaba, a highly valued and sacred site in Islam, was represented in the backdrop, leading to accusations of disrespect and questioning whether such acts are part of the country’s reform efforts.
“SAUDI elite’s degeneracy and vile attacks on Islam have reached a new level this time with images of half-naked singers getting projected on a ‘Kaaba’ placed on a dance stage. Is this supposed to be ‘reform’?” Turkish Century, a page on X wrote.
Many other internet users condemned the ongoing spectacles, describing the situation as “totally ridiculous.”
“Shame on you Arabs you have crossed now every limit. During the opening of the Riyadh season in Saudi Arabia just for the sake of amusement & jolly, a model of Holy Kaba was designed & displayed on the stage and naked women were dancing around it,” another one added.
Saudi Arabia hosted several A-list stars, including Jennifer Lopez who performed at the Elie Saab fashion show in Riyadh earlier this week.
The show also included Camila Cabello and Celine Dion.
Saudi Arabia has been facing several controversies surrounding its Vision 2030, a development roadmap for the country that is implementing various liberal changes.
Earlier this year, reports said the Gulf country was preparing to open its first alcohol store in Riyadh.
This development brought surprise to many as drinking alcohol is forbidden in Islam. Furthermore, selling , purchasing or consuming alcohol in Saudi Arabia is illegal. According to Business Today, drinking alcohol in Saudi is punishable by “hundreds of lashes, deportation, fines or imprisonment.”
