Rabat — Controversy in Saudi Arabia continues to grow following the appearance of celebrities performing with what many view as risque attire on a stage resembling the Kaaba. Many internet users perceive the situation as inappropriate.
The debate sparked division, with local influencers launching campaigns urging Saudis to resist external criticism of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s (MBS) reforms under his new Vision 2030. This roadmap has led to a series of liberal changes throughout the Muslim country, which have sparked global contention.
The incident that sparked outrage was a recent show in Riyadh as part of fashion designer Elie Saab’s celebration of his label. It featured Jennifer Lopez and Camila Cabello, among others, who stirred controversy for their attire during their performances.
Some took to social media platforms to strongly condemn the celebrities’ attire that was perceived as excessive, particularly in the context of Saudi Arabia’s conservative callus.
The controversy sparked widespread debate, with many criticizing the event as a violation of cultural and Islamic norms.
Others, however, have responded by launching a campaign under the hashtag, “We are all Al Saud,” in support of the Saudi royal family.
“Yes we are Saudis, and the Al Saud are our rulers, our mark is on the enemy’s account. We are loyal to the homeland, even until our bones are buried,” one X user wrote, in support of Al Saud.
Another one commended the Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and praised him for his reforms.
“When stray dogs gather in a space to bark against our kingdom, I hope we remain cautious and alert about these stray dogs,” another supporter wrote.
Many others, however, condemned the acts at the public event, describing Saudi Arabia’s rulers as “Zionists.”
“These Zionists are urinating on the Quran in front of the camera. These are the ones racing against time with the Saudi regime to normalize relations with them, with complicity and even fatwas from the deceitful court of scholars,” an X user wrote.
The user continued, saying that what the “Zionist enemy is doing in Gaza is no different from what the Al Saud regime and the intelligence-based backed Salafi court scholars are doing to the holy sites, spreading corruption and decay.”
