Rabat – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Wednesday the nominations for the 2024 CAF Awards, with Morocco standing out in the women’s categories.

The 2024 CAF Awards ceremony, which will recognize achievements from January to October 2024, is scheduled to be held in Marrakech on December 16.

Sanaa Mssoudy, a standout player for AS FAR and the Moroccan national women’s team, has earned nominations for both CAF Women’s Player of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year.

She competes in the latter category alongside her AS FAR teammates and national team colleagues, Doha El Madani and Khadija Er-Rmichi.

Er-Rmichi is also in the running for Goalkeeper of the Year, while El Madani is nominated for the Young Player of the Year award, sharing the spotlight with her fellow Moroccan, Lina Mokhtar Jamai of Paris Saint-Germain.

As for the Coach of the Year title, AS FAR’s Mohamed Amine Alioua has been nominated along with Moroccan coach Lamia Boumehdi, who leads the Congolese club TP Mazembe.

In addition to individual accolades, Morocco is well-represented in the National Team of the Year category, with both the senior women’s national team and the U20 women’s national team among the nominees.

Having qualified for the final of the CAF Women’s Champions League hosted in Morocco, AS FAR is also competing for the prestigious Club of the Year award.

Despite Morocco’s overall dominance in the nominations, many fans and observers of Moroccan football expressed their displeasure a few days following the release of the final shortlist for the 2024 CAF National Team of the Year.

Taking to social media, the fans vented their surprise and disappointment over the absence of Morocco’s men’s team from the shortlist.

With the shortlist only featuring Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, DR Congo, South Africa, and Sudan, frustrated fans of the Atlas Lions blasted CAF for overlooking a team that finished 4th at the 2022 World and has consistently delivered strong performances on both the continental and international stages.
