Rabat – King Mohammed VI has expressed his gratitude to the President of Panama, Jose Raul Mulino Quintero, following his country’s decision to suspend its diplomatic relations with the separatist Polisario front’s self-proclaimed “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (SADR).
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to you, following the wise decision made by your friendly country on November 21, 2024, regarding the Kingdom of Morocco’s primary national cause,” the monarch said in a message to Quintero.
King Mohammed VI added that “this highly significant decision strengthens Morocco’s legitimate rights” and “it aligns with international legality and resonates with the ongoing global dynamics.”
The king expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations between Morocco and Panama, describing the decision as opening a “new chapter” in their ties. He reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to strengthening “the bonds of friendship and cooperation” with Panama in various sectors for the mutual benefit of their peoples.
Panama’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the country’s decision last week, saying that it is committed to constructive foreign policy and multilateral cooperation and emphasizing its support for a “peaceful, just, sustainable and acceptable solution for the parties concerned with the Sahara issue.”
Panama’s move is seen as a turning point in Latin American policy concerning the Sahara issue. The country, which was the first in the region to recognize the SADR and host its first embassy in 1980, has now opted to align with international efforts for a resolution.
For Morocco, Panama’s decision carries considerable weight as it strengthens its position in the ongoing Sahara dispute. The move adds to the growing list of countries that have reconsidered their stance on the SADR, which reinforces Morocco’s sovereignty claims over its southern regions.
