Rabat – Morocco has reinforced its role within the African Union’s (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) throughout 2024, showcasing a steadfast dedication to promoting peace, stability, and development across the continent. This active involvement reflects the country’s vision of a unified and independent Africa.
During its second mandate (2022–2025) in the PSC, building on its initial term (2018–2020), Morocco played an active role in tackling some of Africa’s most critical challenges.
With a strong emphasis on safeguarding the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of African nations, Rabat reinforced its commitment to advancing collaborative, continent-specific solutions.
Advocating integrated solutions for complex challenges
In 2024, Morocco actively championed a holistic and integrated approach linking peace, security, and development to address Africa’s complex challenges.
During multiple PSC meetings, the country advanced policies targeting the root causes of instability, from political transitions to economic recovery, while noting the importance of sustainable, long-term solutions.
Central to this vision was the call for stronger coordination between the African Union and international partners to combat threats such as terrorism and separatism, underscoring the critical need for unity among member states.
Morocco played a key role in supporting peaceful transitions in politically fragile nations, including Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Gabon, advocating for a multidimensional strategy that combines peace-building with socio-economic development.
The country also pushed for lasting political solutions to the crisis in Sudan, while encouraging deeper cooperation with South Sudan in security, cultural, and socio-economic development.
Additionally, Morocco reaffirmed its support for an inclusive political process in Libya, underlining dialogue as the sole path to resolving years of conflict.
Highlighting the active participation of Moroccan women in peacekeeping missions, particularly across Africa, Morocco also prioritized education as a fundamental pillar of its partnerships with African nations, recognizing its potential to drive lasting stability and progress across the continent.
A vision of African-led governance
Morocco’s participation in the PSC embodies a wider vision aimed at empowering African nations to take charge of their democratic and governance pathways. It has established itself as a vital partner, providing knowledge and experience in governance, institutional reform, and sustainable development to foster progress across the continent.
This vision is rooted in the belief that Africa’s advancement relies on its ability to chart its own path, free from external influence. Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to this principle by recognizing the primary role of the UN Security Council in maintaining global peace and security while advocating for the sovereignty of African states within international frameworks.
In October 2024, Morocco’s contributions were acknowledged during the 20th anniversary of the PSC in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The event reaffirmed the Council’s founding principles, including respect for territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the interconnectedness of peace, stability, and development.
Morocco’s consecutive election to two PSC mandates reflects the trust placed in its active role in promoting Africa’s collective vision. Throughout 2024, Morocco’s efforts within the PSC have demonstrated its dedication to building a resilient, independent, and prosperous Africa.
