Rabat – The UN General Assembly has unanimously adopted a landmark resolution proposed by Morocco, focusing on sustainable tourism, including ecotourism, as a powerful tool for poverty reduction and environmental conservation.
14 years after its initial introduction, the resolution reflects Morocco’s strategic efforts in the tourism sector and its steadfast advocacy at the UN, garnering co-sponsorship from 109 member states across diverse regional blocs.
Amid a global landscape often divided by geopolitical challenges, Morocco has emerged as a unifying force, building broad consensus on the critical role of sustainable tourism in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The resolution underlines the importance of bolstering tourism’s resilience to climate-related shocks, natural disasters, and crises while advocating for stronger protections for workers in the sector.
This achievement reinforces Morocco’s leadership on the international stage, particularly within the UN, in championing sustainable tourism as a cornerstone of development. It aligns with the country’s broader vision to transform its tourism industry, as outlined in the Morocco Tourism Strategy 2026.
The plan aspires to position Morocco among the world’s top 15 destinations, increase the sector’s contribution to the national economy, and create 200,000 new jobs.
The resolution also notes Morocco’s ongoing collaboration with international partners, particularly the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and other relevant UN agencies, to strengthen sustainable tourism initiatives. It positions ecotourism not only as a tool for combating poverty but also as a catalyst for economic, social, and environmental development.
In addition, the resolution includes the need for a collective approach to boost investments in sustainable, socially responsible tourism. It advocates for the development of tailored policies that reflect national priorities and align with international best practices to promote a resilient, sustainable tourism sector worldwide.
Morocco has grown as a leading tourist destination, attracting visitors with its cultural heritage, historic cities, and varied landscapes. Investments in infrastructure and sustainable tourism have bolstered its position on the global stage.
