Rabat– Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who serves as Secretary-General of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), is set to chair the World Socialist International Council meeting this Saturday in Rabat. The event will bring together key leaders and representatives from around the globe to discuss pressing political and social issues.
Co-chairing the event will be Driss Lachgar, the secretary-general of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), which is hosting the Socialist International meetings in Morocco. According to Spanish news agency EFE, sources close to the event confirmed that Sánchez is expected to deliver a speech at the meeting.
While details about the exact schedule remain scarce, PSOE sources confirmed Sánchez’s participation in the Socialist International gathering in Morocco. The event will serve as a platform for discussing a wide array of global issues, including peace, security, and democracy, with particular focus on Africa, the Middle East, and North Africa.
The preparatory meetings for the World Socialist International Council kicked off on Tuesday, December 17, at the USFP headquarters in Rabat. With over 200 participants in attendance, the discussions covered a range of significant topics, such as the recent flooding in Africa, the ongoing conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Additionally, the empowerment of women in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region is set to be a key subject in the upcoming discussions.
The World Socialist International Council will take place from Friday, December 20, to Sunday, December 22, drawing together members from the global socialist movement.
Founded in 1951, the Socialist International is a global alliance of political parties from socialist, labor, and social-democratic movements, as well as trade unions sharing these ideologies. With nearly 132 political parties from across the world now part of the organization, the Socialist International continues to play a central role in shaping global political discourse.
The gathering in Rabat marks another significant step in the organization’s efforts to promote democratic governance, peace, and social justice worldwide.
