Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Solidarity has earmarked MAD 396 million ($36.6 million) to support children with disabilities, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of this vulnerable group.
During a session at the House of Councillors on Tuesday, Minister Naima Ben Yahya announced that 27,500 children will benefit from a new program, as part of a broader initiative that also provides support to 19,000 individuals with medical and technical aid and assists 1,000 project leaders with a total allocation of MAD 53.5 million ($5 million).
Additionally, the minister affirmed that several other initiatives have been launched to improve the disabled’s life conditions.
These efforts are part of Morocco’s Integrated Public Policy for the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for 2015-2025. These policies aim to incorporate disability concerns into national and local development plans and ensure alignment with legislative and regulatory frameworks.
The minister also noted the importance of raising public awareness and encouraging families to declare the status of persons with disabilities to access government services.
In line with the government’s ongoing initiatives, the minister spoke on the recent adoption of a decree establishing a disability card system for 2024. Alongside this, a new disability assessment system has been introduced to facilitate access to services under preferential conditions.
In May, the Moroccan Government Council approved a draft decree to issue disability cards, a move aimed at safeguarding and promoting the rights of individuals with disabilities.
The card, which has already been implemented, will allow access to extensive support systems for holders. Among these include financial aid, expanded medical coverage through mandatory health insurance, social assistance, private-sector employment opportunities, and reduced or free transportation costs.
Marking the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, the ministry is conducting consultations with civil society organizations to prepare the National Action Plan for 2025-2026.
These meetings strive to present the findings of this national plan, as well as to engage civil society and all relevant stakeholders in the shaping of this noble initiative.
These reforms align with Morocco’s efforts towards promoting social inclusion, uplifting vulnerable groups, and building a brighter future where every citizen can thrive while fully enjoying their rights.
