Rabat – Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch is in Riyadh to represent King Mohamed VI at the “One Water Summit.”
The event began today and focuses on the global water crisis and sustainable solutions.
Akhannouch touched down in Riyadh on Monday evening, accompanied by Morocco’s Water and Equipment Minister, Nizar Baraka, and received a warm welcome at King Khalid International Airport from Prince Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf.
The Head of Morocco’s government joins other world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
The summit is organised with Saudi Arabia’s leadership and gathers policymakers, experts, businesses, and NGOs to address water scarcity and explore transformative solutions.
Morocco has long been at the forefront of water management. Akhannouch is expected to present how Morocco is tackling the challenge head-on and seize the opportunity to share insights into the country’s strategies for managing water resources.
Last June, Crown Prince Moulay EL Hassan kicked off the construction of Africa’s largest seawater desalination plant in Lamharza Essahel, El Jadida.
The massive MAD 6.5 billion ($650 million) project is expected to produce 300 million cubic meters of water annually, supplying 7.5 million people across Casablanca, Settat, Berrechid, and beyond.
Construction will take place in two phases over a 50-hectare site. By late 2026, the plant aims to deliver 548,000 cubic meters of treated water daily. In phase two, capacity will jump to 822,000 cubic meters. Read Also: OCP Group Secures €200 Million EBRD Loan to Boost Production, Water Security
