Rabat – Morocco and Mauritania have agreed to launch a new platform aimed at fostering economic and parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
Rachid Talbi Alami, Speaker of Morocco’s House of Representatives, held talks today with Mohamed Ould Megett, President of Mauritania’s National Assembly. The meeting took place at the Moroccan parliament in Rabat during a formal visit by a high-ranking Mauritanian parliamentary delegation.
According to a statement from the Moroccan parliament, both leaders praised the strong historical ties and cooperation between Morocco and Mauritania, guided by the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
During their discussions, Talbi Alami and Megett discussed ways to strengthen parliamentary collaboration. They spoke about the importance of increasing dialogue, coordination, and sharing expertise between the two legislative bodies. They also noted the key role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting mutual interests.
One key outcome of the meeting was an agreement to establish a Moroccan-Mauritanian Parliamentary Economic Forum early next year. This forum aims to create a platform for dialogue, sharing experiences, and fostering stronger economic partnerships.
Ould Megett also met with the Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita to discuss bilateral ties and how to strengthen cooperation between the two countries
Morocco and Mauritania maintain strong and growing relations, with frequent meetings between officials to enhance cooperation. Despite Mauritania recognizing the Polisario’s self-proclaimed SADR, it has avoided aligning with Algeria’s anti-Moroccan policies.
Both countries prioritize stability and diplomacy, as seen in the creation of a Morocco-Mauritania Parliamentary Forum to discuss common interests and strengthen ties.
