Rabat – The president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Fernando Gomes, has commended the joint bid by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup as a groundbreaking step for global football.
During the extraordinary FIFA Congress session held virtually on Wednesday, Gomes described the selection of the joint bid as a moment that “not only acknowledges their shared history but also positions the bid as a beacon for future legacies.”
He noted that the decision recognized the countries’ organizational strengths and the boldness of their transcontinental, multicultural approach.
“This is a historic bid, one that goes beyond material aspects. It’s about the principles we intend to establish and ensure for generations to come,” he added.

The three nations presented a proposal that celebrates their cultural and geographical diversity, with Morocco, Portugal, and Spain offering a multicultural, multilingual vision.
Gomes noted that the World Cup provides an ideal platform to promote diversity, human rights, and sustainability. He mentioned the aim to raise the tournament’s profile through environmental efforts and long-term goals while ensuring the sport’s global reach.
Reflecting on the significance of the selection, Gomes called it a “historic moment” for Portugal, marking its entry into the group of nations that have hosted the FIFA World Cup.
Morocco, Portugal, and Spain were officially confirmed yesterday as the hosts of the 2030 World Cup, with the centenary matches set to take place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. Saudi Arabia was also designated as the host for the 2034 World Cup.
After FIFA formally confirmed the three countries as the co-hosts of the 2030 edition, Fouzi Lekjaa, President of Morocco’s Football Federation (FRMF), expressed gratitude to FIFA and the global football community for supporting the joint bid.
He said that the decision reflects the three countries’ commitment to growth and development, highlighting the role of sports, particularly football, in driving socio-economic progress and improving humanity.
This historic decision represents a significant milestone for the host nations and the future of the prestigious tournament.
