Rabat -The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the final list of nominees for the prestigious CAF Awards 2024, set to take place Monday, 16 December, at 7 p.m. in Marrakech.
As anticipation builds for the highly awaited ceremony, Morocco stands out with an impressive number of nominations across various categories.
Morocco’s national women’s football team, the Lionesses of the Atlas, have earned a spot among the three teams vying for the “Team of the Year” award. They are joined by the national teams of Nigeria and South Africa in what is sure to be a competitive race.
For the “Young Player of the Year” award, Moroccan football is proudly represented by 17-year-old AS FAR forward Doha El Madani. El Madani has captured attention with her exceptional performances in the CAF Women’s Champions League, where she scored four goals, including a crucial one that secured her team’s spot in the final.
El Madani’s incredible run continues, as she is also a finalist for the “Interclub Women’s Player of the Year” award. However, she is not alone in the running, as her AS FAR teammate, Sanaa Mssoudy, also earns a nomination in this category.
AS FAR dominates‘Club of the Year’ nominations
For the second consecutive year, AS FAR is up for the “Club of the Year” award in the women’s category. The Military Club has been a dominant force in Moroccan football, securing eight consecutive league titles and a CAF Women’s Champions League final appearance this year.
AS FAR remains the only Moroccan club to have won the prestigious continental competition, reinforcing its legacy as a powerhouse in African women’s football.
AS FAR goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi, who also plays for the Lionesses of the Atlas, is another standout Moroccan nominee.
Er-Rmichi’s remarkable performances, which included saving numerous clear chances and penalties, were crucial to her club’s success in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Two Moroccan coaches are in the running for the “Women’s Club Coach of the Year” award.
Lamia Boumehdi, coach of TP Mazembe, and Mohamed Amine Alioua, coach of AS FAR, have both been nominated following their teams’ performances in the CAF Women’s Champions League, where they faced off in the final.
Their achievements with their respective clubs have made them standout figures in women’s football coaching.
Eliesse Ben Seghir missed out on ‘Young Player of the Year’ nomination
While Moroccan midfielder Eliesse Ben Seghir was initially shortlisted for “Young Player of the Year,” he was later removed from the list.
Despite his impressive start to the season with AS Monaco, the competition in this category remains fierce.
However, his Senegalese teammate, Lamine Camara, along with Ivorian players Karim Konaté (RB Salzburg) and Oumar Diakité (Reims), continue to be in the running.
