Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a weather alert for snowfall and strong winds in several provinces, with conditions expected to affect the country over the weekend.
Snowfall ranging from 10 to 40 centimeters is forecast in areas at altitudes above 1,800 meters. The snow is expected to begin Saturday at 10 am and continue until Sunday at noon. Provinces expected to be affected include Azilal, Al Haouz, Tinghir, Midelt, Ouarzazate, and Taroudant.
In addition to the snowfall, strong winds of 70 to 85 kilometers per hour, accompanied by dust storms, are predicted in several provinces on Sunday from midnight until 6 m. The affected areas include Sidi Ifni, Chtouka Ait Baha, Agadir Ida-Outanane, Inezgane-Ait Melloul, Guelmim, Tiznit, Al Haouz, Taroudant, and Tan-Tan.
The DGM issued an orange-level weather warning, urging residents and travelers in these regions to exercise caution due to potentially hazardous conditions.
The heavy snowfall may disrupt transportation and limit access to mountainous areas, while the strong winds and dust storms could reduce visibility and make driving dangerous.
Authorities recommend staying informed through official channels and avoiding travel to affected areas unless necessary.
Earlier this week, the DGM said Morocco is bracing for winter weather conditions due to a weather system bringing cold air and moisture to various regions, including Western Europe and North Africa.
While much of Morocco and nearby areas are under a strong high-pressure system, an upper-level atmospheric disturbance is creating rain, snow, and colder temperatures, especially in the mountains.
This weather system is expected to bring moisture and cold air masses to the northwest of country and the Atlas Mountains, which could last until the end of the week.
