Rabat – The bodies of five workers were recovered early this morning after a tragic tunnel explosion at the Mokhtar Soussi Dam construction site in the Ouziou area of Taroudant province.
According to a statement from the Ahl Tifnoute municipality, the workers were trapped inside the tunnel after it exploded on Sunday evening, causing debris to block access and subsequently releasing toxic gas.
The municipality added that rescue efforts were significantly delayed due to the tunnel’s narrow structure and the high concentration of gas.
The Facebook page of the municipality shared a video showing local authorities, including the Royal Gendarmeries and Civil Protection teams, as well as a rescue team from the Zgandar mine and volunteers, working throughout the night to reach the workers.
The workers’ bodies were retrieved at around 4 a.m. local time.
The municipality expressed deep condolences to the late workers’ families and loved ones.
The incident has deeply shaken the community and sparked anger among social media users who have raised concerns about the safety measures at the construction site.
Many question whether there was adequate protective equipment and emergency protocols for workers operating in such hazardous environments.
