Rabat – The “Labour Friends of Morocco” group launched in London on Wednesday to strengthen ties between Morocco and the UK’s Labour Party, which currently heads the British government.
Led by British MP Joe Powell, the initiative seeks to create long-lasting partnerships based on shared values and meaningful collaboration. It plans to promote stronger diplomatic, economic, cultural, and educational relations between the two countries.
Key areas of focus for the group include renewable energy, technology, agriculture, and tourism. The group hopes to create new opportunities that benefit both Morocco and the UK by encouraging cooperation in these sectors.
Labour Friends of Morocco also aims to address global challenges such as climate change, green technologies, and sustainability.
During the launch event, members of the group signed a pledge to align the interests of the two countries. They acknowledged Morocco’s key role as an ally of the UK and its unique position as a bridge between Europe and Africa.
The group’s chair Joe Powell expressed pride in leading the initiative, noting that his constituency, Kensington and Bayswater, is home to one of the UK’s largest Moroccan communities.
He expressed his “determination” to work with fellow MPs to strengthen UK-Morocco relations and provide a platform to address issues important to Moroccan communities in the UK.
Morocco’s Ambassador to the UK, Hakim Hajoui, celebrated the launch of the group and spotlighted the historic partnership between the two countries. He noted the strong potential to further elevate this relationship, particularly in economic and cultural collaborations.
Hajoui praised the Moroccan community in the UK for its role as a “vital bridge” between the two countries. The Moroccan community’s contributions are “invaluable” in deepening mutual understanding and fostering shared prosperity, he said.
