Rabat – Police in the city of Marrakech arrested a French-Algerian citizen wanted for committing several homicides.
The 26 year-old suspect, Sahib El Asraoui, is charged with killing a man in 2023 in Dijon, among others. He is also wanted by French authorities for an attempted murder in Planoise in 2020, for which he was sentenced to 7 years in prison.
His extradition to France for his trial is in progress following an Interpol red notice.
Of Algerian origins and a French national, the suspect escaped France in March 2023. He then entered Moroccan territory using forged documents, where he had been hiding until his recent arrest.
After a routine Interpol database check, authorities discovered that he holds a red notice by Interpol’s National Central Bureau in Paris.
El Asraoui is now in custody under judicial investigation, supervised by the prosecutor’s office, and Moroccan authorities have initiated the necessary steps to inform their French counterparts.
These measures aim to allow Moroccan authorities to swiftly share information with relevant French authorities.
This is not the first suspect arrested under Moroccan authorities’ recent crackdown of criminals under Interpol’s red notice.
On Friday, police in the same city apprehended a 25-year French national subject under red notice for attempted murder, with a corresponding prison sentence.
In the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, Moroccan police arrested a 19-year-old Swedish national on January 9. The red notice suspect was reportedly wanted for having firearms for the purpose of criminal activity.
This larger series of arrests of red notice suspects reflects Morocco’s commitment to ensuring security through effective engagement with international law enforcement entities.
