Rabat – Over 35,000 Moroccans have benefited from Morocco’s direct housing support program over the past year, Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, Minister of National Territorial Planning, has said.
The ministry has to date received 110,000 applications to benefit from the program, the minister explained.
El Mansouri made the announcement while speaking at a session of oral questions in the house of representatives on Monday.
In response to a question about the direct housing program, the provided details about beneficiaries and the ramifications of the program.
She noted that the number of young beneficiaries represents 32% of the beneficiaries, while Moroccans living abroad make up 26%.
In addition, the minister outlined that the program provided financial support of MAD 70,000 ($6,800) to 63% and MAD 100,000 ($29,400) to 37% of the beneficiaries.
The program has economically contributed to a boom in the construction sector. It has seen a 9.45% increase in cement sales, a 1.7% rise in property loans, and a 7.2% increase in loans granted to property developers, according to the minister.
Meanwhile, the program has exceeded the target of 75,000 housing units set for 2024, El Mansouri added, recording an achievement rate of 125% with 94,000 units.
She also indicated that her department is working on the generalization of the program to cover cities that have not benefited sufficiently, like Settat, El Jadida, Benslimane, Oujda, Berkane, and Taza.
Low and middle-class housing units’ annual production stands at around 113,000 units, including self-built units, according to the minister.
Morocco designed the direct support housing program to assist families in purchasing homes, reflecting a steady commitment to improve citizen’s quality of life.
While challenges remain in fully addressing the root causes of Morocco’s housing concerns, this initiative has made progress in considerably alleviating housing problems for many Moroccans.
