Rabat – French President Emmanuel Macron recalled the importance of Morocco as a strategic partner during an address at the French Ambassadors’ Annual Conference on Monday.

The French president commended the “unprecedented ambition” embodied by the renewed partnership built with Morocco during his recent State visit to Morocco.

“One of the key moments of recent months has been what we succeeded in building with His Majesty King Mohammed VI during the state visit,” Macron said, noting that the two countries “built a completely new partnership for the decades to come.”

He said this partnership spans all areas, noting that this has “unprecedented ambition.”

“For me, it is truly foundational to this new approach,” Macron added, noting that the partnership “ must, moreover be one of our pillars regarding a reinvented African approach.”

Last year in October, Macron visited Morocco at King Mohammed VI’s invitation. The visit followed his country’s decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara in July of the same year.

During his visit, Macron addressed the Moroccan parliament with a historic speech, in which he reiterated his country’s steadfast position in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

The present and future of the region falls within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, Macron said during his address.

Macron spoke on the importance of Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan, describing it as “the only basis for achieving a just, lasting, and negotiated political solution.

“This is the position that France will implement to support Morocco in international forums,” Macron said.

He added that operators and businesses from France will continue supporting the development of Moroccan southern provinces through investments and sustainable initiatives.

Responding to criticism of France’s position in favor of Morocco, Macron said that his country’s stance is “not hostile to anyone,” adding that their diplomatic strategy on the Sahara is rooted in history and respectful of realities.
