Rabat – The historic city of Fez is celebrating today 1217 years of cultural heritage at the 15th edition of its Annual Day, marking the longstanding cultural heritage of the spiritual capital of Morocco. This annual tradition started in January of 2011.
This year’s celebrations, scheduled for January 4-11, are intended to draw attention to the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
The celebrations are organized in honor of the first foundations set by Idris II, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty, and the city itself in 808.
Yawm Fez Foundation is organizing the celebrations under the theme “Together for Fez: A History of the Past, Evaluation of the Present, and Anticipation of the Future,” and will harbor discussions on the city’s developments.
A conference on the theme “Fez and the Challenges of Sustainable Development” will bring together representatives from the institutions that signed the Fez Day Declaration.
The meeting will shed light on the ongoing transformations in the city and investigate ways to ensure harmonious and eco-friendly development.
This year’s program will not only outline the city’s historic importance but also explore its modern developments, emphasizing its role as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
It will include innovation for the benefit of the city and region hosted by Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University, and focus on architecture, art, and traditional craftsmanship at the Private University of Fez.
The week-long activities will serve to celebrate Fez’s heritage and renew commitment towards the city, blending tradition and modernity, according to organizers.

Among the highlights is an exhibition showcasing Fez’s rich artisanal heritage, featuring local craftsmanship such as ceramics, textiles, and leather goods.
The city has witnessed the launch of many projects aimed at reviving its cultural and historic sites, most notably the restoration program of 27 monuments and historic sites.
