Rabat – The Moroccan national team faced a tough setback in the Kings League World Cup today, losing 4-1 to Colombia in an action-packed match that brought together former football stars and well-known social media figures.
Colombia started strong, with Brihan Gutiérrez scoring in the 4th minute. The situation worsened for Morocco as Julio Perea and Alejandro Ortega scored two consecutive goals in the last minutes of the first half, pushing the game further out of reach. A penalty deep into the second half sealed Morocco’s fate with a fourth goal for Colombia.
Morocco did manage to find the back of the net, with Fouad El Amrani scoring a penalty in the 23rd minute. However, Nadir Louad missed a crucial penalty in added time (40+5), which could have halved the scoreline and changed the match’s momentum.
Despite the loss, Morocco put forth a strong performance, showcasing impressive possession with 64% of the ball and a high pass success rate of 90%. They also displayed a commendable attacking strategy, using their pace and skill to create chances. However, defensive lapses allowed Colombia to take full advantage of counter-attacks, which ultimately decided the match.
Popular Moroccan streamer Ilyas El Maliki followed the live stream of the match from Morocco, as he was unable to join the squad in penalty of his due to a four-month prison sentence for public indecency handed down in October.
El Maliki was released from El Jadida prison on Monday after his sentence was reduced to two months suspended.
Kings League matches are played with seven players per team, including a goalkeeper and six field players, over two halves of 20 minutes each, with unlimited substitutions allowed.
Looking ahead, Morocco’s next challenge will be against Ukraine, who suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Turkiye today. The upcoming match will be crucial for Morocco, as they seek to keep their hopes alive in the competition.
