Algeria’s Nabil Anane will face undefeated Scotsman Nico Carrillo for the interim ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai world title at ONE Championship show ONE 170 on January 24.
Carrillo was slated to go head-to-head with ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai world champion Superlek Kiatmoo in the show’s co-main event, but the titleholder was forced out with a knee injury and replaced with Anane.
Anane, who recently clinched fifth place in the bantamweight rankings, was set to face Kiamran Nabati at the show, but the undefeated Russian star will now get a new opponent.
The 20-year-old Algerian has a chance to fight for interim gold against Carrillo, with the winner facing Superlek in a world title unification contest at ONE 172 in Japan.
After a spectacular 2024, Anane has now won five bouts in a row against top opponents. He finished the year with a clean 3-0 record, knocking out Thai star Kulabdam before picking up two unanimous decision wins against former world title challenger Felipe Lobo and Myanmar’s Lethwei star Soe Lin Oo.
Meanwhile, Carrillo represents a tough test as the Scotsman owns a clean 4-0 record in ONE Championship with a 100% finish rate, most recently knocking out the legendary Nong-O Hama and Thai star Saemapetch Fairtex.
Anane vs Carrillo is one of three world title matchups scheduled to take place at ONE 170 inside Bangkok’s Impact Arena. In the main event, Tawanchai PK Saenchai defends his ONE Featherweight Muay Thai world championship against Superbon while Fabricio Andrade puts his ONE Bantamweight MMA world title on the line against Kwon Won Il.
ONE 170 kicks off at noon (WET) on Friday, 24 January 2025.
