Rabat – Morocco’s national team coach, Walid Regragui, shared his thoughts on the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 following yesterday’s tournament group stage draw.

Speaking to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Regragui expressed both excitement and determination as Morocco gears up for the most-awaited competition.

“We were eager to find out who our opponents would be,” Regragui said. “We have a year ahead of us before the competition begins, and our focus will be on preparing thoroughly to be ready for the big day.”

Morocco has been drawn into Group A alongside Mali, Zambia, and Comoros. Regragui acknowledged the challenges ahead as each opponent is formidable in their own way.

“We’re facing Mali, one of the strongest football nations in Africa, Zambia, a team that’s always tough to handle, and Comoros, the surprise package,” he noted.

The coach expressed optimism about Morocco’s chances, noting the country’s ambition to host a memorable tournament. “We are hoping to make one of the best AFCONs in history, and it will be – especially if we win it,” Regragui said.

Regragui also pointed to the heightened competition across the continent which tells the growth of African football. “There are many strong contenders for the title, proof of the remarkable progress of African football,” he added.

Comoros coach Stefano Cusin shared his thoughts with SNRTnews on the sidelines of the draw, stating, “It’s an honor for us to play the opening match against Morocco. We’re happy to be here because AFCON is all about facing big teams.”

He continued, “Morocco is a very strong and technical opponent, with Hakimi, the best right-back in the world, and other talented players like Amrabat.”

With 24 nations set to compete for continental glory, the 2025 edition of AFCON promises high-stakes encounters.

Patrice Mostepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has also echoed Regragui’s sentiments, agreeing that this tournament edition will be the best in its history.

“The 2025 AFCON in Morocco will be the most successful and exciting in the tournament’s history,” he said.

With the tournament now on the horizon, all participating teams are fired up to claim the title, eager to showcase their footballing prowess and make their nations proud.
