Rabat – Palestinian official Hussein Al-Sheikh has expressed his gratitude to King Mohammed VI for his ongoing efforts to help resolve the issue of Palestinian funds withheld by Israel.

Since October 7, Israel has withheld nearly $1 billion in Palestinian tax revenues. Israel and the Palestinian Authority reached a deal last month to redirect around $500 million of the tax revenue, on grounds that they said to pay for electricity and fuel supplied by Israel.

In a post on social media platform X, Al-Sheikh, who serves as the Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), thanked the Moroccan monarch and government for their support.

“We extend our thanks and great appreciation to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God protect him, and to the pillars of the Moroccan government for their continuous efforts to resolve the crisis of the Palestinian funds withheld by Israel,” reads the post.

Al-Sheikh further expressed gratitude to Morocco’s “continuous and ongoing fraternal effort in supporting the steadfastness and perseverance of our people on their homeland.”

King Mohammed VI has long supported the Palestinian cause through his role as the Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, a body that works to protect the rights of Palestinians, especially in Jerusalem.

Under his leadership, Morocco has provided aid, defended Palestinian rights in international forums, and supported efforts for a just and lasting peace.

During Israel’s genocide on Gaza, King Mohammed VI ordered urgent humanitarian aid to be sent to the Palestinian people.

Morocco also expressed strong support for the current ceasefire, hoping it would lead to a sustainable peace and an end to the suffering of civilians.

Last month, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita said that Morocco hopes all parties will respect the ceasefire agreement and that it will lead to the reconstruction of Gaza and the return of displaced Palestinians.

“The Kingdom of Morocco can only welcome this agreement,” Bourita said, but noted that “King Mohammed VI has reiterated on multiple occasions that it is no longer viable to continue managing crises in the Middle East without addressing their root causes. It is not about ceasing fire to end one crisis, only to wait for the next.”

He explained that there is an opportunity today to build on this agreement and launch a political process for a permanent and comprehensive peace in the Middle East within the framework of a two-state solution.
