The Spanish football league, also known as LaLiga, took issue with recent racist comments targeting Moroccan-Spanish football player Maroan Sannadi.

Mundo Deportivo said on Wednesday that LaLiga sent its report to the RFEF Disciplinary Committee on the racist insults that the Moroccan player received on Sunday during his appearance with his club Atletico Bilbao against Real Betis.

The Spanish news outlet quoted the LaLiga report as saying that two local fans at the Benito Villamarin shouted the following racist and intolerant insults: “Sannadi, go back to your home, black. To Africa with your dead.”

Athletic Club Bilbao signed center-forward Maroan Sannadi on a deal running until June 2029 last week.

The 24-year-old joins after an agreement reached with Deportivo Alavés, with Barakaldo CF – whom Sannadi was loaned to – entitled to financial compensation for his departure.

Born in Vitoria-Gasteiz, to Moroccan parents, Sannadi has forged a reputation at Laliga.

Many football players suffer from racist comments, including Oscar de Marcos. According to the La Liga report,  the football player received insults.

Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior has also been among the football players who have repeatedly faced racist slurs in recent years. In 2024, Vinicius spoke about the situation in a video published by the Brazilian Football Confederation.

He emphasized the importance of talking about racism and fighting it.

“In the last three months, we have managed to put three or four individuals behind bars and hold them accountable for the crimes they committed,” the football player said.

He added that he suffered so much in Spain.

“I play in Spain, where I’ve suffered so much and still sometimes suffer, but it is easing with the help of all clubs and all the people who are doing everything to combat racism,” he said

Vinvisus also said the campaign against racism should continue. He said while the situation does not affect his self-confidence, the situation requires a fight.

“It’s everyone’s fight, because I alone can’t fight all that Black people have been suffering,” he stressed.
