Rabat – Guatemala has renewed support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, considering it as the initiative a realistic, credible, and serious basis for reaching a final solution to end the Western Sahara dispute.
Guatemala’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Monica Bolaños reiterated her country’s position on Tuesday in Rabat, noting that the solution to the dispute lies in the autonomy plan within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
She said that her country supports the efforts made by Morocco to reach a political, peaceful, sustainable, and mutually acceptable solution to the dispute, recalling the opening of the consulate general in Dakhla in December 2022.
The deputy minister said the opening represented an important step towards deepening ties between the two countries.
The country made similar remarks during international forums, including at the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee session in October last year, when the country’s delegation reiterated support for the autonomy proposal.
Guatemala’s delegation also commended Morocco’s autonomy initiative, defining it as a viable path toward a peaceful and negotiated solution.
The support marks an ongoing trend in the international community’s eagerness to close the long-standing dispute.
A growing number of countries have been supporting the Autonomy Plan as its appeal lies in its pragmatic approach, balancing locals’ aspirations with Morocco’s territorial integrity.
