Rabat – Morocco is facing a surge in measles cases, and Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tahraoui, is expected to provide a detailed report on the situation.

Morocco’s Government Council, scheduled for Thursday, will offer a platform to discuss potential measures for measles containment.

Cases of measles have risen since September 2023, with recent figures showing 25,000 cases and 120 deaths.

Mohamed El Youbi, Director of Epidemiology and Disease Control at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, has warned against the resurgence of the disease and its rapid spread,  calling for a swift response to the situation.

As of today, a campaign is taking place in schools to boost and complete the vaccination of students under the age of 18, according to the Ministry of Education.

The ministry also urged school administrations to adopt several measures to successfully ensure vaccination against measles.

School administrations should collaborate closely with health services, the ministry advised, and prepare appropriate and clean spaces to make sure the vaccination goes well.

Additionally, educators and administrative staff should help to facilitate the coordination of the vaccination campaign.

The government has already set measures to combat the measles outbreak and contain its propagation. It launched on October 28, 2024, a “catch-up vaccination campaign against measles” to boost immunization rates, providing adults with vaccinations they didn’t take as children.

Also, the government has set up a surveillance and monitoring system, extending across 12 provincial emergency health centers to provide real-time data on the outbreak.

The Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Interior are coordinating to ensure the measles vaccination goes well for children under 18, as well as people who have been exposed to measles patients.
