Rabat – Police in the US arrested a 20-year-old suspect for his involvement in two fatal shootings, including one against a Moroccan man who lived in New York.
Converging reports identified the suspect as Jilyn Wagner, a 20-year-old man who carried out two murders in the Bronx in just a week.
He was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter in addition to criminal possession of a weapon.
Wanger killed Idriss Cherif El Farissy, a 20-year-old Moroccan man identified by his friends and relatives as a selfless person who worked tirelessly to support and provide for his family.
El Farissy immigrated to the US at the age of 17. He graduated from high school in the US and received an associate degree from Medgar Evers College and a bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Baruch College.
The young man worked as a provider Contracts Manager for over five years at Emblem Health but also picked up a second job to ensure that his family received proper care.
Imane Farissy, the victim’s sister, told Morocco World News (MWN) that her brother was a “selfless person” and always wanted to make sure his family and loved ones were provided for.
“When thinking about starting a family he wanted to make sure that his kids would grow in a financially stable environment that he may afford all of his kids’ needs and wants,” she said.
Converging reports have quoted NYC police as saying El Farissy was shot dead in the head by Wagner when he was returning home from his delivery driver shift at Papa John’s.
According to his sister, El Farissy was killed by the son of the tenant of the first floor apartment of the building where he lived.
El Farissy and his partner had a normal relationship with their fellow tenants, his sister reassured, noting that it is devastating to learn that his death was caused by a tenant.
Like El Farissy’s partner, his sister said the arrest of his killer brought relief and closure to the family.
In comments to The Post, the victim’s partner said she had talked to her husband on the phone before he was shot.
“When he got to the house, I was with him on the phone, and he told me, ‘Baby, I’m going to park the car. Let me hang up on you, just so that I can park and I’m coming inside,’” Maria told The Post.
“And I thought, like, OK, but by the time he hung up the phone, got out of the car, all I heard was shots outside the house.”
El Farissy’s killing is devastating news for his family, the wife lamented.
She also welcomed the arrest of her husband’s suspected killer.
“I think it will help us, all of us, in our grief process, because it is almost impossible to grieve when you know that the person who killed someone that you lose so deeply is still outside just eating, walking, and living their life like nothing happened” she added.
On July 29, Waner also killed a 39-year-old man identified as Roman Martinez. He was shot multiple times in the head, according to police.
This is not the first time a Moroccan has been shot dead in the US.
Several similar cases have made local headlines in recent years.
One of the cases that made headlines is the 2021 killing of Adil Dghoughi by Terry Turner in Texas.
In 2023, Turner received a six-month sentence in a controversial court verdict.
Tuner will spend 180 days in Caldwell County jail, and will serve 10 years of probation.
The defendant will spend 40 days in four-day increments each year of the 10-year probation, including on the anniversary of the day when he shot Dghoughi and on the victim’s birthday.
He was also fined $10,000 for fatally shooting Dghoughi, a 31-year-old Moroccan migrant.
