Rabat – Ambulances, crying, and overwhelmed reactions took over the atmosphere in Temara near Rabat on Saturday when a devastating fire ravaged a house, killing five children.
Initially, speculations over the initial cause of the fire were rife online as concerned Moroccans aimed to uncover the cause of the fire.
Interviews with the children’s parents, however, uncovered that the fire was caused by an explosion of a gas cylinder.
“We cannot even see our children as it becomes impossible to identify their identities. They melted due to the ravaging fire,” a mother of two victims told the press.
The oldest child in the room was 8 years old, while the youngest was only 8 months.
Many have blamed the mothers for leaving the children alone in a room shared by all of the family.
During interviews and press statements, the mothers and families of the fire’s victims also reported conflicts with the landlord.
“He refused to let us put the gas cylinder outside the room,” one of the mothers said.
Many of the interviewees and victims’ families blamed the landlord for not rescuing the children, who were alone during the incident.
The other children lost in the fire were aged two, four, and an 18-months old infant.
Neighbors and friends of the mothers are calling for an investigation and the arrest of the landlord.
One of the relatives claimed the house owner refused to let people in to assist the children.
“He stopped them and did not let him in,” one of the relatives told the press, noting that he also refused to turn off the house’s electrical panel to avoid further damages.
“Who is going to give me back my children,” one of the mothers added.
The devastating situation sparked division online among citizens across the country.
Many took to commenting on social media platforms to blame the mothers for leaving the underage children and babies all alone.
Some claimed that the mothers had locked the door on the children, while others close to the families suggested that the door was unlocked and that neighbors could have saved the children.
“It is against the law to let children all alone,” one netizen said, while others have described the mothers and the victims’ families as “irresponsible.”
“The two mothers should be held responsible. How could you leave the children with an 8-year-old child to take care of babies,” one added.
As updates continue to unfold, it remains to be seen whether an investigation is open to determine who will be held responsible for the heartbreaking story of the five children that lost their lives to the ravaging fire.
