Rabat – Police in Tangier have thwarted a drug trafficking attempt of over 5.7 tons of cannabis in the vicinity of Moulay Bousselham, 137.8 kilometers away from Rabat.
Police carried out the operation on Thursday evening in coordination with Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
During the operation, police arrested two suspects for their alleged involvement in a criminal network involved in international drug trafficking, according to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
Police arrested the first suspect red-handed while attempting international drug trafficking aboard a truck registered abroad.
Searches conducted enabled the seizure of 140 bundles of cannabis, totalling 5.75 tons of cannabis.
An investigation led to the identification of a woman suspected of involvement in the same case. Police arrested her in a separate operation in Kenitra.
Police put the suspects in custody pending investigations that will determine the ramifications of the case and identify potential accomplices involved in the case.
The operation is one of many major drug busts carried out by Morocco’s police recently.
On Tuesday evening, Morocco’s police also thwarted an attempt to smuggle four tons and 321 kilograms of cannabis in Temara, near Rabat.
During the operation, police arrested five suspects aged between 24 and 50 years for their alleged involvement in an organized network that operates in trafficking drugs.
