Severe Weather Disrupts Travel Between Spain and Morocco

Rabat – Strong winds and heavy rain forced authorities to cancel passenger ferry services between the Spanish port of Tarifa and Tangier today.

The Algeciras Bay Port Authority announced that adverse weather conditions in the Strait of Gibraltar caused the disruptions.

Officials cancelled all scheduled departures from Tarifa except for the 8 p.m. sailing, which remains dependent on weather conditions.

Meanwhile, services from Algeciras to Tangier Med experienced delays, though authorities have not yet canceled any sailings.

Spain’s National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) had issued a yellow alert for the Strait of Gibraltar and several areas in Cadiz province until noon today.

The agency warned residents to expect rainfall of up to 40 liters per square-meter in some locations.

The coastline along the strait remains under a weather advisory for high waves. Aemet reported southwest wind gusts reaching 80 km/h and waves up to four meters high.

The disruption marks the latest in a series of weather-related transportation challenges in the region this season.

The hard weather conditions also  affected travel schedules between Algeciras and Tangier, even causing a full block of the route last Tuesday.

Maritime authorities continue to monitor conditions closely as thousands of travelers face uncertainty about their journeys between the two countries.
