Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics has announced the launch of an official investigation following a plane accident at Fez-Saiss Airport on Friday afternoon.
The accident happened after a small aircraft operated by Moroccan airline Air Ocean veered off the runway during landing, according to a statement from the ministry. The accident occurred at 4:10 PM local time and involved a Hawker XP800 jet, registered as CN-TKC.
The flight had departed from Marrakech and was headed to Fez when the plane failed to stop properly during landing. It slid off the runway and crashed into the airport’s boundary wall, added the statement.
Photos and videos released after the incident show that the crash caused serious damage to the aircraft.
Three crew members on board and one person on the ground were injured in the accident, the ministry added, noting that all four were quickly taken to a specialized clinic in Fez for urgent medical care.
The Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Bureau (BEA), which operates under the Ministry, sent a team of experts to the crash site. They will carry out a full investigation to shed light on the cause of the accident. The ministry confirmed that all necessary steps are being taken to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of air travel. It will share more details as the investigation continues, concluded the statement.
Videos circulating online of the accident’s aftermath show the aircraft severely damaged as the Royal Gendarmerie and emergency response teams inspected the aircraft and the area where the incident took place.
