Rabat – Moroccan pastry chef Youssef El Gatou has officially entered the Guinness World Records after making the world’s longest strawberry cake.
The giant dessert measured 121.88 meters and was created inside a skating rink in Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris.
The previous record of 100.48 meters was held by a group of Italian pastry chefs since 2019. This record was organized in Turin as part of the San Mauro strawberry festival.
Youssef El Gatou, who lives in France, assembled the record-breaking cake in just 24 hours with help from French chefs and a team of Moroccan pastry makers.
The cake took a week to finish and was placed on tables in an ice rink for residents to inspect.
The event was attended by official judges from the Guinness World Records who confirmed the new achievement.
Speaking to the Moroccan News Agency (MAP), El Gatou said he was proud of the record, saying it was made possible thanks to the support of both Moroccan and French professionals. Among them was famous chef Nicolas Bernardi, who holds the title of “Best Pastry Chef in France.”
The massive cake weighed 1.2 tonnes and required about 4,000 eggs, 150 kg of sugar, 560 kg of cream, and 350 kg of strawberries.
After the record was confirmed, the cake was shared with the public in a celebration attended by many members of the Moroccan community in France. Portions of the cake were also given to local retirement homes, a hospital, firefighters, and the Red Cross.
This is not El Gatou’s first major challenge. In 2020, he made a giant 20-meter “Galette des Rois” and in 2021, his pastry shop won second place in a regional croissant competition.
