Rabat — Oujda police seized nearly 7,000 psychotropic pills and arrested a couple suspected of drug trafficking on Saturday.
The operation took place in joint collaboration between Oujda’s police and Morocco’s national intelligence services.
Security officials caught the suspects red-handed while they transported drugs in a car.
During the initial search, officers discovered 3,000 pills, including 2,000 ecstasy tablets and 1,000 Rivotril prescription sedatives.
Following up with a home search, police found an additional 3,918 pills — including 3,718 ecstasy tablets and 200 more prescription drugs.
Officers also seized 500 grams of ecstasy powder, 100 grams of cocaine, and abortion pills, along with cash believed to be from the drug sales.
The suspects were placed under a judicial investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office.
Authorities continue to search for other potential accomplices and connections to wider drug trafficking networks.
Morocco has been intensifying efforts to crackdown on drug and ecstasy pills trafficking across the country.
In February, Morocco’s security and customs officers foiled an attempt to smuggle 53,400 ecstasy pills at the Beni Ansar maritime port in Nador.
The North African country has been actively combating this issue, which continues to prove a challenge due to its strategic location as a gateway to and from Africa.
