Rabat – Morocco’s U20 national team has clinched their place in the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup, overcoming a stubborn Sierra Leone side 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
After more than an hour of frustration, the young Atlas Lions finally broke the deadlock late before surviving a nervy finale to secure their historic qualification.
The match at Cairo’s Air Defense Stadium was a test of patience for Morocco, who dominated possession but struggled to break down a resolute Sierra Leone defense.
Despite controlling midfield and creating half-chances, the deadlock remained unbroken for 60+ grueling minutes.
The tension grew as the clock ticked toward extra time, with Morocco knowing that a single mistake could cost them their World Cup dream.
Morocco’s persistence paid off when, finally, in the 115th minute, Sierra Leone scored an own goal by Amara Nmale Keita.
Sierra Leone threw everything forward in search of another equalizer, but Morocco’s defense held firm.
Morocco advances to the semifinals, where they will face Egypt with a chance to reach the U20 AFCON final.
More importantly, their qualification for the World Cup continues Morocco’s remarkable rise in youth football.
For now, the North African celebrates another milestone – proof that patience, resilience, and belief can turn dreams into reality.
