Rabat – A deadly traffic accident near the town of Tamanr in the early hours of Wednesday left eight people dead and 24 others wounded.
The crash took place along the national road N1, which links the coastal cities of Essaouira and Agadir.
The impact occurred around 4 a.m., when a passenger bus collided head-on with a private car under still-unclear circumstances.
Emergency responders arrived to find a harrowing scene, with bodies scattered and survivors trapped in the wreckage.
Seven people died at the site of the accident. An eighth victim passed away shortly after being taken to the hospital.
Zakaria Ait Lahcen, the regional health delegate in Essaouira, described the situation as “extremely difficult.” Speaking to SNRTnews, he confirmed that seven of the injured are in critical condition, among them the bus driver.
Seventeen others sustained injuries that range from moderate to minor.
Medical staff at Essaouira’s regional hospital are treating the wounded, while the deceased were transferred to the morgue at the same facility.
Local health teams, already stretched thin, are working under pressure to stabilize the most severe cases.
As authorities investigate the cause of the crash, questions linger about road safety on Morocco’s national highways, especially during nighttime travel.
