Cristiano Ronaldo is considering a move away from Al Nassr, with Saudi rivals Al Hilal pushing to sign the Portuguese star ahead of this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.
Ronaldo, who scored 41 goals in all competitions this season, appeared to signal the end of his spell at Al Nassr with a cryptic social media message on Monday night, writing: “This chapter is closed. The story? It’s still being written.”
The 40-year-old’s contract is set to expire on 30 June, and while Al Nassr remain keen to renew terms, negotiations have reportedly stalled following the club’s failure to secure any major silverware this season.
Al Nassr finished third in the Saudi Pro League, 13 points behind champions Al Hilal.
Al Hilal are looking to make a marquee signing to fill the void left by Neymar’s long-term absence and have identified Ronaldo as a priority target. The Riyadh-based club are prepared to offer a similar salary to his current deal and the opportunity to feature in the Club World Cup, where they will face his former club Real Madrid in the first match on June 18 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in January 2023 following his exit from Manchester United, has scored 93 goals in 105 appearances for the club, trailblazing the influx of football superstars to the Saudi Pro League, including Neymar, Benzema, and Bounou, among others.
Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre, a close associate of Ronaldo, told El Chiringuito that “nothing is signed” and that the striker is “keeping all options open.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is expected to make a decision in the coming weeks, as he weighs up what could be the final chapter of his illustrious career.
