Rabat – Swiss-Moroccan artist and data scientist Zineb Mezzour is presenting a solo exhibition titled “La mer – Liquid Topographies” from July 1 to 6 at the Hôtel Les Bords de Mer in Marseille.
Curated by Charlotte Lidon, the show explores water, nature, and invisible patterns found in the world around us.
Zineb’s art is inspired by fractals, which are complex shapes that repeat themselves in nature, like in trees, waves, roots, and corals. These forms, first described by mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot, help her express the connection between science and emotion, structure and chaos.
Her journey as an artist began with writing. The first line of her artistic manifesto, “Welcome to the undersean,” expresses her deep, personal connection to the ocean and nature. It also sets the tone for her art, which she sees as a way to breathe and survive.
She started experimenting with blue ink and water on paper, colors and materials that would become central to her work. Though she is self-taught, she lets her intuition and the movement of water guide her process.
Over time, she expanded to larger paper pieces in Casablanca, and later explored ceramics during a residency in Marrakech. Today, based in Marseille, she continues to find inspiration and freedom in the sea.
In “Liquid Topographies,” water represents more than just a theme, as it becomes a medium and a partner. Zineb creates a space for water and ink to interact freely, forming fractal patterns that appear random, but actually reflect the deeper logic of nature.
For Zineb, her role is to set a frame and let the materials move, and let natural rhythms take over.
The exhibition includes new works on paper, ceramics, and for the first time, textiles. Represented by the Myriem Himmich Gallery in Casablanca, she invites visitors to experience the natural world in a new way.
