Uganda will face Niger for the first time at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) when the two meet in Kampala in a Group C fixture.

It will be Uganda’s eighth meeting with West African opposition at CHAN, having recorded three wins, two draws and two defeats in previous encounters. They have beaten Burkina Faso, Senegal and Guinea at the current and past tournaments, drawn with Mali (2016) and Côte d’Ivoire (2018), and lost to Togo (2020) and Côte d’Ivoire (2022).
Niger, meanwhile, are playing their first match against East African opponents at CHAN. They have faced tournament hosts twice before – losing on penalties to Sudan in the 2011 quarter-final and suffering a 5-0 semi-final defeat to Algeria in 2022.
Uganda head coach Morley Byekwaso says his side will adapt tactically to counter Niger’s approach. “No game is the same. Each match presents different challenges… tactics will have to change a bit because Niger’s style of play is different,” he said. He also urged home fans to turn out in force: “This match is decisive for our hopes of qualification.”
Defender Gavin Mugweri Kizito warned against complacency. “We will not assume it will be easy just because they lost. We are mentally, physically, and technically prepared… The most important thing is to win and avoid conceding goals.”
Niger coach Harouna Doulla stressed the need to correct mistakes from their opening loss. “We have to rectify some mistakes… and pressure our opponent, using our strengths,” he said, adding his side is prepared for Uganda’s intense home support.
Captain Abdoul Kahar Issoufou Boubacar called for focus. “Against Uganda, we will play cautiously… In Niger, there is a saying that nothing is impossible.”
