Rabat – Morocco has further consolidated its position as Spain’s leading natural gas importer, maintaining the top spot in June 2025, according to the Corporación de Reservas Estratégicas de Productos Petrolíferos (Cores).
In June, Morocco imported 858 GWh of natural gas, accounting for 35.5% of Spain’s total exports and far ahead of France, which received 354 GWh (14.6%). This follows the trend from 2024, when Morocco surpassed France for the first time with 9,703 GWh compared to France’s 9,362 GWh.
While Morocco increased its imports, Spain’s overall gas exports declined by 17.1% over the past 12 months, reaching 41,181 GWh.
In the same period, Spain’s natural gas imports rose to 25,173 GWh in June, a 3.7% year-on-year increase. Algeria remains Spain’s primary supplier, covering 43.6% of its imports, but notable changes are reshaping the supply landscape: liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports surged by 19%, whereas pipeline gas deliveries fell by 20.8%.
Morocco’s increasing reliance on Spanish gas aligns with its broader strategy to diversify energy sources and secure stable supplies. As part of this plan, Rabat is preparing to launch a floating regasification unit at Nador West Med, a key step toward reinforcing the country’s energy infrastructure.
The North African country is also advancing its renewable energy ambitions, targeting a 52% share of renewables in its electricity mix by 2030. This dual strategy positions Morocco as a pivotal player in Mediterranean energy cooperation and strengthens its strategic partnership with Spain.
