Rabat – A severe road accident took place on the national road linking Taroudant and Agadir on Thursday evening near the commune of Bigoudine.

Eight people died on the scene along National Road N11 at Douar Tarwa Yassine, according to local authorities.

The accident occurred after a collision between a freight truck carrying vegetables and a taxi bound for Chichaoua with seven passengers on board, the same source said.

The tragedy cast a heavy shadow over the local community, where grief and shock spread swiftly among residents.

Local authorities and Royal Gendarmerie units moved immediately to the site, taking the necessary measures and launching an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.

The bodies of the victims were taken to the morgue of the Hassan II Regional Hospital Center in Agadir.

Meanwhile, the fatal incident stirred strong reactions within the area, with locals calling for stricter road safety monitoring on this vital stretch to prevent future disasters.

The tragedy unfolds against a wider backdrop of rising road accidents across Morocco.

According to official figures, more than 4,000 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2024, with serious injuries surpassing 10,000 and overall accidents exceeding 143,000 cases.

The trend has worsened in 2025, as over 1,600 deaths were recorded in the first five months alone, an increase of nearly 21% compared to the previous year.

Pedestrians and motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable, together representing close to 70% of the victims.
