Rabat – Moroccan rapper Taha Fahssi, widely known as ElGrande Toto, has left Morocco for France following a formal legal complaint accusing him of “public indecency.”

The complaint was filed by a civil association in Kenitra after his concert there, claiming his use of explicit language and provocative behavior violated public morality under Moroccan law (Article 483 of the Penal Code).

The association claims the rapper’s performance constitutes a “clear violation of public order.” They urged authorities to act and expressed concerns about the influence on minors and local communities.

“Tolerance toward a high-profile artist, despite his history at other festivals, sends a dangerous message that celebrity provides immunity from the law,” added the association.

Earlier this week, ElGrande Toto posted an Instagram story from Paris Orly Airport confirming his departure and addressing critics.

He posted another story today saying: “I will never forgive you for making me flee my home when I hadn’t even seen my son’s teeth come in.”

This is not the first controversy involving ElGrande Toto. In July this year, his televised performance at the Mawazine Festival on 2M prompted more than 190 complaints due to “vulgar language and provocative gestures.”

Morocco’s audiovisual regulator, HACA, dismissed the complaints, emphasizing that artistic expression should not be censored, although broadcasters are expected to exercise contextual sensitivity.

He also previously faced national backlash for comments about cannabis use in 2022 and received an eight-month suspended jail sentence and fines in 2023 following related legal proceedings.

Other charges the singer faced include “insults, defamation, and threats” against a journalist, a musician, and a policeman.

Despite the controversies, ElGrande Toto remains one of Morocco’s most successful artists, with millions of global listeners.
