St Andrews – At an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) gathering on Wednesday in Vienna, Moroccan Ambassador Azzeddine Farhane recalled the “hundreds of African experts” in the field of nuclear energy and science that “have participated this year in Morocco in scientific visits, fellowships, workshops, and university degree programs.”
Morocco has been a member state of the IAEA since 1957, the agency’s founding date. Although Wednesday marks the most recent renewal of the relationship between the agency and the North African country, there have been frequent reiterations of their agreement.
Alongside an emphasis on training and expertise, Morocco and the IAEA will focus on the role of nuclear power in water resource management, environmental protection, and industrial applications.
Morocco has long-been committed to harnessing and promoting the safe use of nuclear power in the realm of South-South cooperation.
In 2022, Morocco partnered with IAEA to establish the Rays of Hope initiative, which sought to expand life-saving cancer treatments and meet the dire need for radiation therapy and further nuclear medicine in African countries. Morocco was a major leader of the initiative, with the Moroccan National Institute of Oncology recognized as the initiative’s Anchor Center, and 90 countries appealed to the initiative for aid.
