Rabat – Converging reports in Algeria are buzzing about potential youth-led demonstrations in protest of economic and political deadlock.
Viral social media posts show a poster, where Gen Z from that group of young Algerian activists under the GenZ213 are determined to take to the streets on Friday, October 3.
The goal is to revive the spirit of the 2019 Hirak movement, according to political observers.
Algerian political analyst Oualid Kebir said the peaceful marches will take place after Friday’s prayers across the country’s provinces to “voice popular demands rejecting the worsening corruption, economic stagnation, and political monopoly by the ruling elite.”
Reports said youth activities will also march toward El-Mouradia, the presidential palace in Algier, citing the socio-economic crisis that the country faces, including youth employment that exceeds 30%.
The news comes as Algerian state-owned media and mouthpieces have been engaged in criticizing Morocco’s security approach during recent youth-led protests.
Since last week, Morocco has witnessed a series of protests launched by young people to condemn socio-economic gaps, including fragile healthcare and education.
On social media, viral posts of Algerian Gen Z are now calling for a similar movement to denounce unemployment and high living costs.
In 2019, Algeria witnessed a large-scale movement under the Hirak after Boutefila refused to step down and sought to run for a fifth term.
