Rabat – Protesters of all ages are determined to continue their peaceful demonstrations, urging the government to respond to their basic rights– including justice, dignity, quality education, and more.
Many Moroccans gathered in front of Morocco’s parliament on Saturday, reaffirming their demands.
Protesters chanted several slogans, including “freedom, dignity, and social justice.” They also held banners, calling for the release of activists and youth arrested in peaceful protests.
Many Moroccans are also calling on the government to step down, blaming it for the deterioration of the healthcare and education systems.
Moroccan cities have been witnessing protests since last week. The protests were launched by young people from Generation Z, who continue to condemn socio-economic gaps, including fragile healthcare and education.
The protests followed demonstrations that started in Agadir following the death of at least eight pregnant women in a local hospital due to complications from cesarean surgeries.
The unemployment rate, which reached at least 13.3% and other socio-economic crises also sparked anger among citizens, seeking reforms.
Earlier this week, protests turned violent, sparking concerns and panic among citizens.
Many videos documented rioters’ involvement in vandalism crimes, targeting local shops, banks, and vehicles.
Many citizens took to social media to condemn the violent demonstrations, which overshadowed peaceful protests seeking reforms rather than chaos.
Police arrested hundreds involved in vandalism, with authorities vowing to take necessary measures against any behavior aimed at undermining citizens’ security and the country’s stability.
Peaceful protests resumed over the past few days, starting on Friday.
The National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) issued a statement on Saturday, commending the peaceful atmosphere of the youth-led protests.
In the statement, the council said that it observed that protesters and security services successfully implemented a rights-based interpretation of the right to peaceful assembly.
It emphasized that maintaining peaceful protests requires shared responsibility between protest organizers and public authorities.
GenZ212 announced that peaceful protests will continue in several provinces on Sunday, including in Rabat.
