OpenAI Says it Wants to be the ‘Next OS’ as it Pivots to Enterprise with Big Partner Deals

“You should expect a huge focus from us on really leaning into enterprise,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Monday at the company’s DevDay conference.

OpenAI Says it Wants to be the ‘Next OS’ as it Pivots to Enterprise with Big Partner Deals

Rabat – OpenAI used its DevDay stage on Monday to outline a clearer plan for leveraging the consumer momentum built around ChatGPT and transforming it into a platform for businesses and everyday digital life.

That strategy includes new developer tools that let apps run inside ChatGPT, pilot deals with household names in media and retail, and a major chip supply pact to build the data-center power the company says it needs.

Chief executive Sam Altman framed the shift plainly: “You should expect a huge focus from us on really leaning into enterprise,” he told journalists after the event, signaling OpenAI’s intent to sell bigger, deeper contracts to companies, rather than only relying on consumer subscriptions and API fees.

Altman also pointed to a broader belief within the company that ChatGPT can become more like an operating system — an always-on platform where people turn to for tasks, apps, and purchases.

OpenAI showed demos where third-party services — such as Spotify for music, Zillow for real-estate searches, and design tools inside the chat — operate without users leaving the conversation.

This move is meant to make ChatGPT a one-stop interface where you ask, it runs the task, or provides the right partner app for you. Early partners, including Spotify, Zillow, Mattel, and Etsy were announced at the event or in related briefings.

Enterprise push plus infrastructure bets

The company didn’t just talk about software. OpenAI also announced and confirmed several infrastructure and commercial arrangements that underline the enterprise push.

Most notable was a strategic supply and investment arrangement with AMD to secure large quantities of next-generation AI chips and to scale OpenAI’s computing footprint.

Executives argued that to be a reliable platform for companies, banks, retailers, media firms, or major manufacturers, OpenAI needs predictable performance, security controls, and billing models that companies expect.

The new developer tools, labeled by OpenAI as AgentKit and expanded SDKs, are intended to let businesses embed task-handling AIs and instant checkout features into the chat interface, which could change how firms sell and how customers buy.

Reactions were mixed in the market. Shares of some partner companies shifted after the announcements, and analysts noted the plan makes sense strategically as enterprise contracts are larger and stickier than consumer subscriptions.

But the infrastructure bill is large, given that OpenAI has signaled heavy spending on computing capacity. Some rivals, including Google, Microsoft, and Meta, are racing to build comparable enterprise offerings.

Altman tried to temper hype with hard numbers and a sales pitch. OpenAI believes millions of users already treat ChatGPT as a daily tool, and the company wants to deepen that relationship so businesses can plug in services and pay for more advanced, private setups.

For now, OpenAI’s push raises familiar questions about privacy, control, and competition. With a clear bet, OpenAI plans to move from a mass consumer app to a platform that companies trust, and power it with a global infrastructure to match.
