Rabat– The Moroccan youth movement GenZ212 announced on Saturday morning the suspension of its planned weekend demonstrations, describing the move as a “strategic pause” to strengthen organization and coordination.
While the group made no direct reference to King Mohammed VI’s speech delivered the previous day, the timing of the announcement drew widespread attention.
In its statement, GenZ212 said the pause aims to make the next stage of the movement “more effective and influential.” The group reaffirmed that its demands remain unchanged, calling for accountability among corrupt officials and urging the government to take responsibility for the worsening social and economic conditions in the country.
The collective also indicated that a new call for mobilization would be announced later on Saturday, with the next protest to be “directed against the government and all corrupt figures hindering the aspirations of the Moroccan people.”
Founded by anonymous organizers, GenZ212 has gained over 200,000 members on the online platform Discord since its creation in late September. The movement has been staging nightly gatherings across Morocco, drawing crowds ranging from dozens to several hundred participants.

The movement’s rise follows public outrage over the deaths of eight pregnant women who died after undergoing cesarean sections at a public hospital in Agadir in mid-September. The incident sparked widespread calls for urgent reforms in the healthcare system, later expanding to include demands for education reform and social justice.
Unlike traditional political parties or unions, GenZ212 has distanced itself from formal organizations, addressing its demands directly to King Mohammed VI.
On Friday, during his address marking the opening of Parliament’s autumn session, the King urged the government to accelerate development programs, particularly in education and health.
The monarch emphasized that Morocco was “moving steadily toward greater social and territorial justice,” urging the executive branch to prioritize regions facing severe vulnerability.
In recent years, Morocco has launched several initiatives aimed at reducing regional disparities and promoting social justice—objectives now echoed and amplified by the growing GenZ212 movement.
