Rabat – Casablanca’s police arrested 12 individuals on Tuesday evening following a violent confrontation between rival football fan groups in the Fida-Mers Sultan district.
The clashes led to serious injuries and property damage, authorities said.
According to a security source, the confrontation quickly escalated when supporters from two football teams hurled stones and set off flares in a public street, injuring a road user who sustained a permanent disability. Several parked cars were also damaged during the altercation.
Police patrols intervened swiftly, managing to disperse the crowd and apprehend 12 suspects shortly after the violence broke out.
The suspects are believed to be members of organized fan groups, known for previous incidents of sports-related hooliganism.
The detainees have been placed under judicial investigation under the supervision of the public prosecution to determine their individual roles in the attack and assess the full extent of their involvement.
Investigations remain ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals linked to the case.
The incident adds to growing concerns over sports-related violence in Morocco’s major cities.
In recent years, Morocco has stepped up efforts to curb hooliganism and reinforce safety at sporting events.
Authorities have adopted stricter security measures, including a stronger police presence at high-risk matches, the installation of surveillance systems, and the enforcement of laws against violent behavior.
These initiatives form part of a broader national strategy to safeguard fans, players, and public property, while promoting a culture of respect and fair play within and beyond stadium grounds.
