Rabat – The members of both Houses of Parliament affirmed, on Monday, that United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on the Western Sahara issue enshrines the sustained diplomatic efforts carried out under the wise leadership of King Mohammed VI, in defense of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During a joint plenary session of the two Houses, the parliamentarians emphasized that the Royal Vision has enabled Morocco to achieve unprecedented diplomatic gains. They hailed the clarity and effectiveness of the royal vision, stressing how it has enabled the crowning of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the linchpin of the UN-led process to resolve the Sahara dispute.
The King “has been leading Moroccan diplomacy with wisdom and firmness, courage and determination since His accession to the Throne,” they said. “The latest Security Council resolution marks a break with the previous ones, as it constitutes the culmination of a cumulative diplomatic process following an exemplary Royal approach.”
The parliamentarians noted that this resolution consecrates Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara within the framework of the Autonomy Plan. After allowing the separatist Polisario Front and Algeria to hijack its mediation efforts for decades, the UN now acknowledges that Morocco’s proposal is the best hope for resolving this artificial conflict.
This is a welcome development, the MPs agreed, pointing out that it is a recognition of the fact that, “in a context marked by conflicts, the Kingdom has constantly chosen the path of wisdom, prioritizing peace, dialogue, and a thoughtful diplomatic approach.”
They noted that the historic speech the King delivered on Friday constitutes a clear roadmap for the future. The speech, recalled the MPs, aimed to make the Western Sahara a pioneering pole of development and an economic hub open to its regional environment, including the Sahel and Sahara region.
‘The dawn of a new age’
The UN’s consecration of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the framework and basis for negotiations marks a historic turning point and also reflects the enlightened leadership of King Mohammed VI in managing this file internationally, said Rachid Talbi Alami, Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In addition to recognizing Rabat’s historical rights and sovereignty over its southern provinces, he added, this latest UN resolution represents a mark of confidence from the international community in Morocco’s political, economic, social, and institutional model of the Kingdom.
For his part, the Speaker of the House of Councillors, Mohamed Ould Errachid, recalled that this resolution “is the fruit of fifty years of struggle and continuous diplomatic and political action in defense of the sovereignty and territorial unity of the Kingdom.”
He explained: “Throughout this patriotic journey, Morocco, under the leadership of a wise Monarchy, has advanced with confidence and serenity, according to a clear vision, to demonstrate that the Southern Provinces are, more than mere geography, the soul of a nation borne by allegiance, nourished by memory, and preserved by the generations.”
For Ould Errachid, Resolution 2797 reflects the growing conviction of the international community that Morocco’s autonomy proposal is the only realistic route to a lasting and feasible political solution to the Sahara dispute.
Morocco “is at the dawn of a new stage in the process of its national cause, where the page of management gives way to that of change, in the continuity of an anchored diplomacy, based on the clairvoyant vision of His Majesty the King, since the historic speech of November 1999 on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the Green March,” he concluded.
